Political Notes: Redmer Inks Top Staff — and Fundraising Numbers Trickle in

State Insurance Commissioner Alfred W. Redmer Jr., one of two Republicans running for Baltimore County executive, announced Tuesday that he has hired three top campaign staffers: Campaign Director Zachary Peters, Finance Director Nicole Ossola, and Communications Director Hannah Marr.

“The first test of executive leadership is finding the best talent, putting that talent in the right position, and setting the culture of your operation,” Redmer said in a statement. “Therefore, I am extremely excited to recognize the caliber of energetic and experienced talent that our campaign has attracted, who I believe will give us a competitive advantage and propel us to victory. I have full confidence in Zach, Nicole, and Hannah, and am grateful that they have chosen to join our effort.”

Peters is a former top aide to Redmer at the Insurance Commission and has worked on a variety of Republican campaigns around the state. He is also an economic development commissioner for the Town of Mount Airy.

Ossola has run her own Annapolis-based political fundraising firm since 2009; her clients have included Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh (R). She previously served as a deputy finance director at the Maryland Republican Party.

Marr has most recently served as press secretary to Gov. Larry Hogan (R), and worked on the governor’s 2014 campaign, managing all aspects of social media and communications.

Redmer is competing with state Del. Patrick McDonough for the Republican nomination for county executive. He reported raising $189,000 since January 2017 and had $123,000 in the bank. McDonough had not yet submitted his annual campaign finance statement to the Maryland State Board of Elections as of Tuesday night. All state candidates must submit their reports by midnight Wednesday.

Candidates from across the state are beginning to announce their fundraising totals for the past year:

— Howard County Councilman Calvin Ball (D) said he will report raising $204,446 for his county executive campaign. Of that, $143,013 came in after his announcement in early November that he was challenging County Executive Allan Kittleman (R).

“This is our year,” Ball said in a statement. “We are grateful and tremendously encouraged by the generosity of supporters since my recent announcement for County Executive. I intend to work vigorously to continue raising the funds necessary to introduce my record and our vision to every voter in Howard County.”

Ball did not say what his cash-on-hand was.

Kittleman hadn’t released his campaign finance report or issued a statement as of Tuesday night, but he had $725,000 in his campaign account a year ago.

— Evan Glass, one of 29 Democrats seeking an at-large seat on the Montgomery County Council, filed his campaign finance report for 2017 showing he received 548 individual contributions totaling $157,096. Glass is participating in the county’s public financing system.

Of the total number of donations, 487 were from individual Montgomery County residents. In accordance with Montgomery County’s public financing system, Glass has already received $100,882 in public financing and applied for an additional $15,395 in the latest report. His cash on hand is $143,552.
