Baltimore County Del. Morhaim Will Retire

Baltimore County Del. Dan K. Morhaim (D), who has passed a long list of health care legislation in his 24-year legislative career but was reprimanded by his colleagues in 2017 for failing to disclose that he worked as a consultant for a company trying to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Maryland, announced Sunday that he would not seek a seventh term.

“I have worked each day to serve our region and state,” Morhaim said in a Facebook post. “My commitment to social change continues, and I will be pursuing new opportunities to make a difference in the fields of healthcare and the environment.”

Morhaim, who is 69, said that he will leave the House as the longest serving physician in the history of the General Assembly.

Morhaim also released a long list of legislation he has passed through the years on health care, the environment, and consumer protections.

Morhaim’s looming retirement creates an opening in Baltimore County’s 11th District, which covers Pikesville and Owings Mills. The district’s other two delegates, Democrats Shelly L. Hettleman and Dana M. Stein, are favored to win reelection.

The only Democrat to have filed for the House so far is Amy Blank, a longtime community and Democratic activist — though Morhaim’s departure could prompt others to run.
